Sound sculpture made with an ipê chair, guitar parts, magnetic pickup and amplifier
The Backrest is a solid wood chair adapted and transformed into a stringed instrument to be played vertically. With handcrafted pickups that create a timbre very similar to that of a guitar, the Backrest‘s shape is also inspired by the ancient Greek lyre. The Backrest also allows the musician to use other plectrum instruments such as the pick or slides, but also the bow, which creates musical gestures reminiscent of the cello.
It was co-authored by Vivian Caccuri and Paulo Nenflidio especially for the group exhibition at the Luisa Strina gallery, A chair is a chair is a chair, curated by Nessia Leonzini and Livia Debbane.
