White pigment inlay in Cedar and Ivory Wood engraving
Private collection
Wave is the graphic representation of the sound wave of the word wave, the sound of which was recorded by the artist’s own voice. The visual form of the sound wave was then printed and transferred to a wooden board. It was then manually engraved in low relief and the groove filled with white pigment. If it were possible to carry out the opposite process, where we could hear the sound from the drawing on the wood, given the imprecision in the process, it is likely that we would hear the sound of the artist’s voice exclaiming the word wave with a transmuted timbre, loaded with the textures of the wood fibers and the trembling gestures of the hand in the rigorous engraving process.
The work Wave was produced especially for the solo exhibition Weights and Measures and exhibited at the Baró gallery in 2018, curated and critically written by Henrique Xavier.
